Young’s Foot Rest stands
A few years ago, during a period of impulsive downsizing, I sold my collection of four Young’s Foot Rest stands (above) on eBay. These stands are scarce, unusual and very interesting.
Each stand sits at an inclined angle, with the front legs slightly longer than the rear legs. The most complete advertising appears on Version #3 (the stand with the gold wash). Besides whatever purpose they served for the Young company, they could also have been used as sadiron stands. Most likely they pre-date 1900.
I’ve found this company and its blacking products nearly impossible to research. Back in 2005 I contacted the Stoneham (Massachusetts) Historical Society. Unfortunately they had no historical information on file, but they later found a Young’s stand packed away in a storage box that contained wagon and harness items.
Imagine my surprise when I recently discovered a fifth version! This one sold for $83.22 on eBay on April 13, 2020. Notice the recessed cup built into the stand, probably to hold a small tin of boot polish.

- Version #5 ~ unsigned on the reverse. As with all Young’s stands, the uppermost legs are slightly longer, so the stand sits at an inclined angle.
