Two trivets with the letter L

Above: nickel-plated cast iron, 4 5/8” w/four 3/8” pad feet. On face: L.

These two intricate trivets were cast through the rim. Considering the molten iron had to flow uninterrupted through the entire pattern, I’m curious as to how many trivets came out perfectly during production. I imagine any with defects were melted and re-cast. The significance of the lettering and the foundries where they were created is unknown.
